Agricultural Topics —b5 By .J. B. SLACK Benson Branch Office of Eastern Carolina Chamber of Commerce I have just received notice of the poultry short course which is held at the State College every year for folks who are interest ed in poultry. This is to be held January 23-28. This is a wonder ful opportunity for folks who are interested in poultry to get a week's intensive training in poul try work on such subjects as hous ing, feeding, disease, hatching and rearing chick, candling and grad ing of eggs, judging and the se lection of breeders, and many oth et subjects of vital interest to the poultryman. There is also instruc tion in the standard judging of fowls and one of the most inter esting phases of this short course iis the judging contest held on the last day, the winner of which is awarded a very beautiful tropy Cup. The only expenses attached to attending this poultry short course is your room and meals while at the college, and theso can be ob tained at a very reasonable pries. All the instructions are given by the very best poultry expert in the country. They are men who have devoted the g-reater part of their life to the study of and ex perimenting with poultry, and any one attending this short course will never regret it if they are in terested in growing more and bet ter poultry. While on the subject of poul try, we have on hand one or two good fonnals^ for mixing your own poultry feed. The following* is what is known as North Caro lina Laying Mash, which wa worked out by the Poultry Depart ment at Sate College: Bi>n meal, 4 lbs. Table salt, 1 lb. Cor meal, 35 lbs. Wheat middling: 20 lbs. Fulverized oats,. 20 pound Fish meal (or meat meal), 20 lb* The total would be 100 pounds. Another laying marh whicl is being used by some poultrynr ;j in this section with very £ood re. suu 113 is the following: 200 lbs alfalfa leaf meal, 100 lbs. butter milk, 300 lbs. fish meal, 200 lbs bran, 500 lbs. middlings, 100 lbs bone meal, 000 lbs. corn meal, 2( lbs. sulphur, and 10 lbs. of iodiz J salt. A laying mash should be k pt before the birds at all times so that they can eat any time they want it. A good grain mixture for feeding grain is as follows: Corn 50 lbs., Oats 30 lbs., Wiheat 20 lbs. Each twelve hens should hav one pint of this in the morning and the same in the evening, feed ing a little bit more of the grain mixture in cold weather than in warm weather. There has been quite a bit of hog cholera scattered over this section this fall and winter, and a few people have lost quite a feiv hogs- \ epresenting a consider able sum of money. There is only one way to prevent this, which \r. by vaccinating*. There is an old saying that “an ounce of preven tative is worth a pound of cure*’ and this is certainly true in the case of hog cholera, for a few dol FARM LOANS u We are in position to make an unlimited number of acceptable loans to farmers.
